ATLANTIS
Integrated Hydroformylation and Oxidative coupling of methane to C2 and C3 base chemicals.

The ATLANTIS project aims to revolutionize methane utilization by integrating Oxidative Coupling of Methane (OCM) with steam cracking and hydroformylation (HF). This integration allows for producing olefins and C3 molecules like propanol without relying on expensive renewable electricity or fossil fuels. By using the exothermic heat generated from OCM to power the endothermic steam cracking process, ATLANTIS provides an energy-efficient and sustainable approach to chemical manufacturing, reducing CO2 emissions and establishing methane as a valuable chemical feedstock.
The project focuses on developing an OCM catalyst with over 60% ethylene selectivity and minimal coking tendency alongside a robust Co-based hydroformylation catalyst with over 90% 1-propanol selectivity. Additionally, ATLANTIS will design a high-pressure heat exchanger/reactor with thermal efficiencies exceeding 80% and a hydroformylation reactor achieving over 45% propanol selectivity with 90% thermal efficiency. A comprehensive digital twin will accurately simulate the integrated process, supporting real-time optimization and process scalability.
ATLANTIS is projected to reduce the carbon footprint of 1-propanol production by 62%, from 3.1 to 1.2 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of product. Heat integration within the process also has the potential to decrease emissions related to ethylene production by 0.62 tonnes of CO2 per tonne. The project promises significant capital and operational expenditure savings and an estimated return on investment of 28%, making it a competitive alternative to conventional technologies.
With a target of reaching Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4, ATLANTIS sets the foundation for future industrial implementation through collaboration with industry stakeholders for technology scale-up and efficiency refinements. The project also explores broader industrial applications of ATLANTIS technology, positioning it as a flexible solution for various chemical production needs.
By aligning with the Moonshot innovation program’s objectives, ATLANTIS provides the chemical industry with tools for significant emission reductions and a pathway toward low-carbon manufacturing, positioning Flanders as a leader in sustainable chemical processing.
